Stress and Fertility – Are They Related ?

Stress and Fertility – Are They Related ?

About stress and fertility

Stress and fertility are closely related. A recent study has cocluded that excessive physical or emotional stress can make women infertile. Scientists found that women with high levels of stress related hormones may stop ovulating (amenorrhea) and would therefore be unable to conceive. A recent study shows stress can reduce sperm and semen quality, which might affect male fertility also. Stress and Fertility are closely related for both Man and Women. Eliminating stress before trying to get pregnant is a a great idea. As a matter of fact Stress and Fertility are related in a way that a reduction in stress can aid in reducing time to pregnancy.

Stress Relief Techniques

Now that you know that stress and fertility are closely related you should look for ways to reduce stress to a minimum. Every woman knows which stress relief techniques are most suited for her. After all, there is no one solution to fit all..  In addition, try to combine relaxation and stress relief techniques like breathing, meditation, sports, etc. You can also add mild physical activities throughout your day.  Take a walk, use the stairs instead of an elevator and so on. Physical activities help lower stress levels and can support a better blood flow throughout your body. These activities are important as long as they are done at the correct proportion. Very strenuous sports can erode the body, thus leading to a reduced sperm concentration and a temporary reduction in testosterone production.

Toxic Buildup in the Body

Toxins can arrive from pesticides, fertilizers, air and water pollution, heavy metals and medications. They can also be found in different materials added to processed foods, such as preservatives, artificial colors, flavors, stabilizers, sweeteners, etc. Toxics tend to occumulate in the body and may adversely affect proper functioning of various body systems.

Avoid Testicular Exposure to High Temperatures

Heat has an adverse effect on fertility as sperm develop best at a temperature several degrees cooler than core body temperature.  In essence, a rise in testicular temperature leads to reduced sperm output, decreased sperm motility and an increased proportion of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa in the ejaculate.  This is probably the reason why a man’s testicles are located in the scrotum and outside the body. In conclusion, to keep your testicles cool keep away from hot tubs and saunas, keep laptop computers off your lap, avoid wearing tight underwear, don’t sit with your legs crossed etc.
There are many evidence that heat stress can also have an effect on women. In women, heat stress can compromise the oocyte and the follicle in which it is encased. High air temperatures 10 days before oestrus were associated with low fertility.*

Extreme weight gain or loss

It turns out that overweight men also suffer from a decline in fertility. This happens because excess weight affects the body’s hormonal balance. If you are planning a pregnancy, both you and your partner should go on a diet to reach a healthy weight. A weight you can easily maintain. Read more about the complete fertility diet.

Medication use

There are medications which can impair both male and female fertility. Arthritis medicines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, drugs to treat digestive problems and antibiotics – can create fertility problems. In man, medications can lead to reduced sperm output, decreased sperm motility and an increased proportion of morphologically abnormal sperm cells. In fact, if you are on or have taken medications in the past, its best if you contact your doctor for additional clarification and advice.
