Vitex and fertility

Vitex and fertility in women

Vitex is a shrub that is native to various regions of Italy and Greece; it has been used in herbal medicine for centuries and is considered one of the most widely used herbs for the support of gynecological concerns and imbalances. Modern clinical research has revealed that Vitex has been useful in helping to balance fertility hormones. Since it does not contain any hormones within it, it has a supportive and nondirect action on the female anatomy, making it one of the most useful herbs for the treatment of infertility in women. Please note that Vitex should only be used in women; when used in men, it can lead to poor sperm motility and decreased testosterone levels.

Vitex and fertility in women: How it works

Vitex has a supportive and regulative function on the pituitary gland, which is also known as the master gland. The pituitary gland controls numerous bodily functions including sending chemical signals to the ovaries that regulate the production of hormones. This process, in which the pituitary glands control how much hormone is produced, is also commonly known as the hormonal feedback loop.

Vitex has been known to:

Inhibit FSH

Vitex inhibits the production of FSH or the follicle stimulating hormone. Instead, it encourages the production of luteinizing hormones, which help to increase progesterone production.

Lengthens a luteal phase

Vitex has proven to be effective in lengthening the luteal phase. Although Vitex does not contain any hormones, it helps to stimulate the body to produce the luteinizing hormones (LH) thatpromote ovulation. An increase in LH also boosts progesterone levels by invigorating the creation of the corpus luteum.

Reduces progression of endometriosis

Doctors use Vitex to treat mild endometriosis or prevent its advancement. It has also been effective in treating amenorrhea, which is the lack of menstruation, as well as irregular menstruation, which can hinder fertility greatly.

How much of it should you take?

For the best results, Vitex should be taken long term, however, clinical research has shown that results can be seen as early as 10 days of use. The full benefits of the treatment may not be experienced until about 6 months of continued use or longer. This is because Vitex makes fundamental changes in the female reproductive system, which is extremely delicate, slowly and behind the scenes.

Unlike most refined synthetic drugs, Vitex acts on a purely supportive capacity, which means that it does not force the body to change, which consequently leads to long term balance. Vitex is available in many different forms including powder, loose herbs, capsules, tincture and in tea form. Capsules and tincture forms offer consistent results and the dosages of both are easy to control and manage.
